Project Safe Flight Weekly Update: Week of April 19th, 2005

by Nicole Delacretaz

Dear PSF volunteers,

Here is the weekly update from the field and other issues regarding Project Safe Flight.

This update includes the following:

1. Field numbers and information

2. Our new phone coordinator

3.Yahoo group reminder

But first of all, I would like to share with you the joy of receiving almost daily phone calls from people who are interested in our project and want to become a volunteer. This is very encouraging and allows me to believe that we will be well prepared for peak migration.

1. Field numbers and information

The bird activity has been very slow this week with a total of five findings, all dead.
2 thrushes (1 hermit, 1 swainson’s)
3 sparrows (1 house, 1 swamp, 1 white- throated)
All five birds were found in the downtown area (four at the WFC building)

As for now, we have volunteers patrolling in four major sites:

the downtown area (100% covered, but we are still looking for people to team up for this long route)

the midtown area (85% covered --> 1 day left to fill)

the Morgan Mail building (week-end not covered)

the MET (in the process of being covered, TBD)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is new to our list and as summer approaches, we would love to have this building monitored during the day. It has potentially killer-windows on all three sides that face the park, reflecting bird habitat. We are looking for people who’d be interested in doing a weekly walk around the building, anytime of the day. We are curious to find out what happens on this site. Please call Nicole 646-243-5894 if you wish to participate in the MET monitoring

2.  New phone coordinator

We are happy to welcome our new phone coordinators Joan S. Zofnass and Pat (Chin Sweeney), who we help us manage daily calls for injured birds.
Their “hotline” will be open weekdays from 8.30am to 10pm and the numbers are: 212-752-2203 or 917-513-3126.
We are still looking for a week-end phone coordinator, so please call Nicole 646 234 5894 if you are interested.

3.  Yahoo group

And last, just a reminder to inform all of you about the yahoo group that we created especially for PSF. This discussion board allows all of us to share our experiences, find answers to our questions, and communicate our findings.
To post a message use the following link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/projectsafeflight/

That’s all for this week.

Take care,

Nicole
