Project Safe Flight Weekly Update: Week of April 26th, 2005

by Nicole Delacretaz

Dear PSF volunteers,

This update includes two parts – first, a field update prepared by Nicole Delacretaz, PSF Field Coordinator, and then an education and outreach update prepared by Karen Cotton, PSF Education and Outreach Coordinator.

Field Update:

This field update is brief but full of good news. It holds:

1. Weekly overall numbers

2. The phone coordinator team

3. The MET location

1. Weekly overall numbers

This week’s numbers are low and include only four birds, three of which were dead.
    - a northern perula (Morgan mail) - dead
    - a white-throated sparrow (WFC) - uncaptured
    - a white-throated sparrow (Chase plaza) - dead
    - a yellow-bellied sapsucker (Javis Center) - dead

With almost a month’s worth of data, this is a good opportunity to look at what we have found so far. In total, PSF volunteers have found 26 birds, as the chart below indicates.

The most problematic location is still downtown with a total of 15 birds, compared with 10 in the rest of Manhattan.
In total, we found 16 dead birds and 10 injured birds.

Thank you all for this combined effort, you are doing a great job.

2. The phone coordinator team

Our phone coordinators are now available both on weekdays and weekends. Denise Trezza will be available for people who need help and advice when finding a bird on weekends.
Here is the updated information:

During weekdays, Dr. Joan S. Zofnass or Pat Chin Sweeney will answer the hotline at 917-513-3126 or 212-752-2203 (8:30am until 10pm Mon-Fri).

During weekends, Denise Trezza will take over at 646-283-4192.

I jump on the occasion to thank Joan, Pat and Denise for helping NYC Audubon on this matter.

3. MET

And to finish off this update, more good news: the Metropolitan Museum of Art is now monitored on a daily basis during weekdays. We are all very curious to know what happens there. The MET still needs monitoring during weekends, so let us know if you are interested in taking Saturday walks around the museum. Please call Nicole at 646 243 5894.

That’s all for this week.

Keep up the great work,

Nicole
