Project Safe Flight Update: September 6th, 2005

by Nicole Delacretaz

Hello everyone,

First of all, welcome to this new season of Project Safe Flight.

This first update will keep you informed of our activities and program for this season.

PSF was officially launched this past Monday, September 5th. I am happy to announce that we have new volunteers on board and other novelties this season.

Hotspots

For those of you who missed the orientation, this season’s priority will be hotspots. Not only will we monitor the known hotspots Morgan Mail and the WFC) more intensively, but we have decided to look for new ones. As of now, there are five new locations but this number will most certainly grow.

These five locations are:

Columbia Presbyterian, G.Washington Bridge

82nd Street and 5th MET Museum
(this building will receive more attention than in the past)

110th Street and Park Avenue

54th and 11th Avenue Ball field

Jewish Theological Seminary & 123rd Street near B'way

For all of you, who still haven’t picked a route for this season, please contact me and we’ll work something out. My email is: ndelacretaz@nycaudubon.org

Lights Out

Lights Out initiative will be launched mid-September. To measure the impact of this initiative, volunteers and NYC Audubon employees will take photographs of the hundred tallest buildings of Manhattan before the initiative and respectively during Lights Out New York. This analysis will not only enable us to measure the light intensity in NYC but it will also allow us toevaluate the success of this initiative. If you wish to participate in this evaluation, please contact:

Birds

Birds have already been found this season, indicating that migration has started. It will spread and intensify between mid-September and mid-October, but data show that it will extend well into November. Quantified updated will be sent to you on a weekly basis.

Take care and thank you for your time.
