PSF Update - October 04, 2007 Dear PSF Friends, Fall migration is in full swing and it’s about time I informed you of the latest Project Safe Flight happenings. This update will include:
1. Morgan Mail As most of you are aware, Morgan Mail has been retrofitted over the summer and this is a great, great news for NYC Audubon and all the volunteers who monitored this building over the years. All the large glass panels along the south façade of 28th street and facing Chelsea park have been covered by an opaque vinyl film, thus preventing the trees from been reflected, as exposed in the picture below. Monitoring at this site began early September and I am happy to confirm that no birds were found on this façade so far this season. But there’s more to it! This success story caught Peter Duffy’s attention, a reporter from the New York Times! You can catch up with this article which was published Saturday September 22nd by clicking on the link below: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/22/nyregion/22birds.html
Once again, I wish to thank all the volunteers who contributed to this success: this retrofit would have never happened without them.
2. Launch of PSF Monitoring On Wednesday September 12th, I held an orientation to launch the fall monitoring season and once more, it was a real success. I discovered many new faces and was happy to see former volunteers coming back as well. This season, attention is given to the Bellevue Hospital on East 27th street, the MET, the Jacob Javits Center, the World Financial Center Area, Downtown Brooklyn, the American Museum of Natural History and Morgan Mail. Here is what volunteers have reported so far.
3. Numbers from the field About 70 birds have been recorded in the database so far, bringing our total numbers way below previous years. This is mostly due to the fact that our number one Bird-kill Zone no longer kills birds: Morgan Mail is in last position J
The most recurring species found so far include: 12 Northern Parulas 7 Blackpoll Warblers 6 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds 4 Common Yellowthroats 4. Volunteers Needed I you have a bit of extra time on your hands and wish to participate in PSF this season, please contact me and we’ll find a task that will both fit your schedules and skills as well as my needs. You will receive more updates from Project Safe Flight very soon. Until then, take care, Nicole
