PSF Update - October 17, 2007 Dear PSF friends and volunteers, In this update, you will find out about the latest PSF field activities.
Global Number So far this season, volunteers have documented 129 collisions around Manhattan and Brooklyn, including 26 injuries and 103 deaths.
Location Tally I am happy to report that Morgan Mail’s south façade hasn’t harmed a single bird this season, keeping its collision number to the lowest level ever: 4 collisions, all on the west façade. In comparison, by the same time last year, Morgan Mail had witnessed 157 collisions, 153 of which were fatal. Our “new” number one bird-kill zone is the Jacob Javits Center with 53 collisions. Comparison with last year’s data suggests that the numbers are stable since 56 birds were found within the same time frame. Other collision locations are the WFC, the MET and Bellevue Hospital. The total numbers are exposed below. Species Tally Below, please find a chart of all the species collected by volunteers so far this season. The total number of species reach 35 and we can expect this number to grow are migration continues. The Northern Parula is still our most recurring species so far but may well be replaced by the White-throated Sparrows as they keep on coming in. Before I leave you, I wish to thank all volunteers who make PSF a success and who help migrating birds in their perilous journey. Take care, Nicole
