PSF Update - May 15, 2008 Dear PSF volunteers and friends,
It’s about time I gave you an update on the progress of Project Safe Flight which was launched over a month ago.
Although a lot of birds have come through already, PSF has not seen its usual collision numbers this season as our database indicates 36 collisions so far, with 4 injured and 32 dead birds. Previous years reached numbers as high as 118 birds (2005) for the same time frame and this can be explained by a variety of factors. The first thing that comes to mind is our Morgan Mail success story, given that this building accounted for a large numbers of collisions each season. A volunteer recently walked by the building and was happy to confirm that the building definitely stopped killing migratory birds: no birds were found! Then, the low numbers can be explained by alternate migration routes that birds may use or also an overall low numbers of migrants. I will let the experts speak. But what I am sure of is that the monitoring this season is consistent and regular, thanks to over 30 volunteers who patrol the streets of NYC!
6 sites are being monitored almost on a daily basis and here are the results so far:
- MET Museum 6 collisions - Bellevue Hospital 6 collisions - WFC 5 collisions - WFC Winter garden 5 collisions - Javits Center 4 collisions - AOL Time Warner 2 collisions - AMNH 0 collisions (but an investigation suggest that collisions happen there on a regular basis)
Species wise, our 36 birds are composed of 19 different species, all migratory. A quick top 4 goes as follows:
6 Ovenbirds 3 Song Sparrows 3 Common Yellowthroats 3 Wood Thrushes
I will keep you in the loop of events, so stay tuned to Project Safe Flight.
Thank you for your support and passion,
