Dear PSF Volunteers,

In this update you’ll find that the numbers are winding down, which indicates that migration season is almost over. The monitoring will last a little longer and the end of the season will be announced soon.

1. Baby-bird phone assistant needed

We are looking for a person who would be willing to help us deal with the baby-bird phone calls. We need someone who can give advice to people who find baby birds. This job can be done from home. Please contact me if you wish to help.

2. Numbers

At this stage of migration, we found 101 dead birds and 18 injured birds.

The following graph illustrates collision intensity by location, indicating that peaks occurred at slightly different times during the season for each location. This can be explained by the different vegetation types around each location which attract different species at different times of migration.

Also, last week two Yellow-billed Cuckoos were recovered in the city. One died and one was rescued at Morgan Mail by Amber Sweeney who brought it to the Animal Medical Center on 62nd and York. A quick follow up call a few days after informed me that the birds was recovering with a rehabilitator and would be released soon. These success stories make all our efforts worth while. I can never thank all the volunteers enough for all their hard work.

Enjoy Cal Vornberger’s picture of the Yellow-billed and you’ll hear from me next week.

Take care,

Nicole
