Dear friends of PSF, In this week’s update I am announcing the end of the monitoring for this migration season at the end of this week. Our total numbers are 120 birds for the whole season, which is very low. All major Bird-kill Zones were monitored more intensively than ever, potential BKZ were tested and some known BKZ witnessed less than 10 collisions (WFC area). These elements combined allow us to think that less bird collided with buildings this season than other years. The reason for this low number is not understood yet and needs to be analyzed in detail. Elements such as weather patterns, migration routes and general population trends will probably help us understand this phenomenon. If we look at the migration intensity graph again, we see that different locations experienced different peaks. It is interesting to notice that the species were different ones as well. Jacob Javits Center is the first to peak and is represented by the following species: Grey Catbird – Northern Parula – White throated Sparrow – Kinglet Then comes Morgan Mail. It’s peak hold the following species: Oriole – Ovenbird & Black and white Warbler – Blackpoll Warbler – Indigo Bunting – Hummingbird – Northern Parula And finally the MET Museum with: Common Yellowthroat 5= 1; Mourning warbler – Grey Checked Thrush - Flicker The total number of speci= es for this season reaches 40 and the top 3 species are: American Woodcock (8) Grey Catbird (8) Ovenbird (8) Please remember so send in your hours so I can keep track of your effort. You have done an amazing job this season and have contributed to a long term conservation effort. Thank you again. Regards, Nicole __________________________________ PSF Program Manager NYC Audubon |
