The Fall Roost annual benefit raises essential funds to protect wild birds and their habitats in New York City. This year’s Roost, held on October 14, 2020, was entirely online, with a program focusing on the pleasures and benefits of Urban Birding. We debuted stirring videos, were treated to a special musical performance from guest Steve Martin, and held our first-ever online bird trivia contest! Our fabulous silent auction returned, featuring a public, pre-event auction and instant sale store as well as a private, day-of auction full of VIP experiences available for bid only to Roost registrants.
This year’s Roost was a success beyond what we dared hope for in this uncertain time. Our supporters really came out for the birds this year and made a difference, serving as an inspiration to everyone in our community that people care about a healthy environment, the protection of wildlife, and our fellow New Yorkers. With your help, we can carry out our mission and expand our corps of conservationists and bird-lovers.
And with your help, we are set to launch the Feathered Friends afterschool online bird club. Our goal was to match a challenge offered by the Robert Wilson Foundation and Mike and Mary Tannen, and we did it! The evening totaled $42,000, enough to get us started and to bring fun and educational materials to every child who wants to learn.
We send our sincerest appreciation to Karen Benfield, MaryJane Boland, Marcia Fowle, Cathy Heller, Tatiana Kaletsch, and Jenny Maritz for the hard work and dedication, and again to Karen Benfield for the videos and spearheading the production. Special thanks to Steve Martin! And to Chris Cooper for leading the Feathered Friends appeal!
Proceeds from the Fall Roost support New York City Audubon’s efforts to protect wild birds and their habitats in the five boroughs through scientific research, community engagement, advocacy, and boots-on-the-ground restoration. Learn about our key initiatives such as Project Safe Flight, Harbor Herons, and Tidal Connections. Keep up to date on local conservation issues and legislation that needs your support by signing up for our Avian Advocates monthly email list.
Be on the lookout next summer for the announcement of our next Fall Roost!
